1. Balance Your Water Chemistry Before Winter Sets In

A well-balanced pool is far less likely to develop algae or corrosion.

  • pH: 7.4–7.6

  • Alkalinity: 100–150 ppm

  • Calcium hardness: 200–400 ppm

  • Chlorine: 2–4 ppm

  • Add a winter algaecide (non-copper if you have a salt system).

  • Shock the pool 24–48 hours before putting on the cover.

2. Skim, Brush, and Vacuum Thoroughly

The cleaner the pool goes into winter, the easier spring opening will be.

  • Remove all leaves and debris.

  • Brush the walls and steps.

  • Vacuum manually or run the robot.

  • Empty skimmer baskets, pump basket, and leaf canister.

3. Lower Water Level (Only If You Get Freezes)

Mild climates (AZ, SoCal, NV, TX southern parts):Do NOT drain water. Keep it full so the plaster doesn’t dry out and crack.

Freeze-prone climates:▼ Lower water just below the skimmer to prevent freeze damage.

4. Protect the Pool Equipment

If you experience freezing temperatures:

  • Drain water from pump, heater, filters, and pipes using the drain plugs.

  • Add pool-safe antifreeze to lines if necessary.

  • Keep valves partially open to avoid pressure buildup.

If no freezing (Arizona/Tucson):

  • You can continue running the pump 2–4 hours/day.

  • Use freeze-protect mode on your system if available.

5. Use a Pool Cover (Highly Recommended)

A good cover prevents:✓ Debris buildup✓ Algae growth✓ Evaporation✓ Chemical loss

Types:

  • Solid cover: Best for cleanliness.

  • Mesh cover: Easier to manage, allows drainage.

If you prefer not to cover the pool (common in AZ):

  • Increase pump runtime slightly.

  • Maintain chlorine levels.

  • Skim weekly.

6. Check Chemicals Monthly Throughout Winter

Even though usage is down, chemically neglecting the pool over winter is what causes spring problems.

  • You may only need to add chlorine every 2–3 weeks in cold water.

  • Low pH can damage plaster or equipment.

  • High pH allows scale buildup.

7. Run the Pump During Freezing Nights

If temps drop near or below freezing:

  • Run the pump overnight to keep water moving.

  • Freeze protection automation will do this for you if your system has it.

8. Clean or Backwash Your Filter

Dirty filters cause algae over winter.

  • Cartridge: clean thoroughly

  • Sand: backwash

  • DE: recharge after backwashing

9. Maintain the Area Around the Pool

  • Trim trees to reduce leaf drop.

  • Store outdoor furniture or keep it tied down so debris doesn’t blow in.

  • Check that drainage areas around the pool remain clear.

Arizona / Desert Region Specific Notes

Since many of your past questions are Tucson-based, here’s a local version:

Tucson-specific winter pool care

  • Most homeowners do not winterize or drain lines — freezing is rare.

  • Run the pump 4 hours/day in winter (more on freezing nights).

  • Keep water level full.

  • Monitor pH closely — desert water tends to rise in pH over time.

  • Expect more dust than leaves; backwash or rinse filters monthly.

  • Cover is optional but helps with evaporation and dust.

Quick Monthly Checklist

✔ Test & balance water✔ Check chlorine level✔ Top off water✔ Skim & empty baskets✔ Inspect equipment for leaks✔ Rinse filter if pressure is high
