What Is the One Thing You Wish Your Current Home Had?

By Wes Stolsek | OMNI Homes International
Every home has its strengths. Maybe you love your neighborhood, enjoy your backyard, or appreciate the memories you've made over the years.
But here's a question worth asking:
If you could change just one thing about your current home, what would it be?
Would it be a larger kitchen? An extra bedroom? A three-car garage? Maybe a home office, a swimming pool, or simply less maintenance?
Sometimes, the one thing we're missing can make a bigger difference in our daily lives than we realize.
Our Housing Needs Change Over Time
The home that was perfect for you ten or fifteen years ago might not be the best fit today.
Perhaps you purchased your home when your children were young. You needed bedrooms, a large backyard, and plenty of room for everyone.
Today, the children have moved out. You have rooms you rarely use, a yard that requires constant attention, and more house than you really need.
Or perhaps the opposite has happened.
You're working from home, caring for an aging parent, or discovering that your current floor plan simply doesn't provide the flexibility you need.
Life changes. Sometimes our housing needs to change with it.
What Do Tucson Homeowners Wish They Had?
When talking with homeowners throughout Oro Valley, Catalina, Northwest Tucson, Marana, and the Catalina Foothills, there are several features that frequently come up in conversations about their ideal homes.
1. A More Functional Kitchen
The kitchen is often the center of the home. More counter space, better storage, a larger island, or an open layout can dramatically change how you enjoy your home.
2. A Better Outdoor Living Space
Here in Southern Arizona, outdoor living is a major attraction.
A covered patio, outdoor kitchen, swimming pool, or simply a beautiful view of the Catalina Mountains can make a home feel like a personal retreat.
3. A Dedicated Home Office
Working from the dining room table may have been acceptable temporarily, but a dedicated office with privacy and adequate space can make a tremendous difference.
4. A Larger Garage or More Storage
Between vehicles, tools, holiday decorations, and recreational equipment, storage can become a challenge. For some homeowners, an additional garage bay is more valuable than another bedroom.
5. Less Maintenance
Not everyone wants a bigger house.
Sometimes the one thing homeowners really want is less work.
A smaller property, low-maintenance landscaping, or a home in a community where certain exterior maintenance responsibilities are handled can free up valuable time.
And that time might be better spent traveling, visiting family, enjoying hobbies, or simply relaxing.
Should You Remodel or Move?
This is where the conversation becomes interesting.
If your current home is missing something important, you generally have two choices: improve the home you have or find one that better fits your needs.
Remodeling may make sense when:
You love your neighborhood and location.
The improvement is physically and financially practical.
You plan to remain in the home for several more years.
The cost of remodeling is reasonable compared with the potential benefit.
Moving may make more sense when:
Your current floor plan cannot reasonably accommodate your needs.
The improvements would be too expensive.
You want a different location or lifestyle.
You need significantly more or less living space.
Your home requires more maintenance than you want to handle.
Keep in mind that not every renovation adds dollar-for-dollar value to a property. Some improvements are primarily about personal enjoyment, and there's nothing wrong with that.
The important thing is understanding the numbers before making a decision.
Don't Just Think About the House. Think About Your Life.
I often encourage buyers and sellers to look beyond square footage, countertops, and the number of bedrooms.
Think about how you actually want to live.
Would you rather spend your weekends maintaining a large property or enjoying everything Southern Arizona has to offer?
Would you prefer a large house with unused rooms or a smaller home with a beautiful outdoor living area?
Would you trade a formal dining room for a comfortable home office?
There is no universally correct answer.
The right home is the one that supports the lifestyle you want today and in the years ahead.
Sometimes One Change Makes All the Difference
You don't necessarily need a bigger, newer, or more expensive home to improve your quality of life.
You may simply need a home that works better for you.
And before spending thousands of dollars remodeling, it can be helpful to understand what your current home is worth and what alternatives are available in today's Tucson-area real estate market.
