Getting your home ready for Autumn, Winter, and Yes even the Holidays

Fall & Winter Home Preparation Checklist

A. Safety First

• Have your furnace or heat pump serviced and filters replaced.

• Check that carbon monoxide and smoke detectors work and replace batteries.

• Inspect chimneys and fireplaces for soot or blockages.

• Keep fire extinguishers in the kitchen and near fireplaces.

• Clear dry leaves and debris from around your home and gutters.

• Ensure outdoor lighting works for dark evenings.

• Stock up on ice melt, sand, and shovels.

• Check your emergency kit (flashlights, blankets, water, batteries).

• Inspect your roof for loose shingles or leaks.

B. Energy Efficiency

• Caulk around windows, doors, and trim to prevent drafts.

• Add or replace weatherstripping on doors.

• Use window film or thermal curtains for insulation.

• Drain and store garden hoses; shut off outdoor spigots to prevent freezing.

• Insulate exposed pipes in crawl spaces or garages.

• Flush your water heater to remove sediment.

• Replace outdoor bulbs with LEDs for efficiency.

• Put holiday lights on timers or smart plugs to save energy.

C. Cleanliness & Comfort

• Vacuum and clean vents, baseboards, curtains, and ceiling fans.

• Steam clean carpets and upholstery.

• Declutter closets before adding coats and holiday gear.

• Clean the oven, range hood, and fridge coils before holiday cooking.

• Check expiration dates in pantry and freezer.

• Stock up on baking staples and cleaning supplies early.

• Rake leaves, clean gutters, and trim dead branches.

• Power wash decks and cover outdoor furniture.

• Store summer tools and bring out snow gear.


D. Holiday Readiness

• Test and untangle holiday lights; replace broken bulbs.

• Create a guest-ready plan with extra bedding and towels.

• Check fire safety around decorations and candles.
