Where Do You Want to Wake Up Five Years From Now?

Most real estate conversations start with a house.

How many bedrooms do you need? How many bathrooms? What price range? Do you want a pool? A large yard? A three-car garage?

Those are important questions.

But I think there may be a better question to start with:

Where do you want to wake up five years from now?

Not just what house do you want to own—but what do you want your life to look like?

Think Beyond the House

Five years from now, your life could look very different.

Maybe the kids will be gone and that large house won't make as much sense anymore.

Maybe you'll be retired—or getting close to retirement—and you'd rather spend your time traveling than maintaining a large property.

Maybe you're renting today, but five years from now you'd like to have several years of homeownership and equity behind you.

Maybe you're ready to move up. You don't necessarily need a bigger house—you want a better location, more privacy, a view, a larger lot, a gated community, or the features you've worked years to afford.

Or perhaps five years from now you don't want to wake up in Arizona at all.

That's worth thinking about, too.

Your Home Should Support Your Life

We sometimes get this backward.

We build our lives around our houses instead of asking whether our houses still fit our lives.

Think about your typical morning five years from now.

When you look outside, what do you want to see?

Mountains? Desert? A golf course? A smaller backyard that doesn't require much work?

Do you want to be closer to your children or grandchildren?

Would you rather live closer to restaurants, shopping, medical care, recreation, or the airport?

Would a single-story home make more sense?

Would you enjoy an active-adult or 55+ community?

Would you rather have acreage and fewer neighbors?

There isn't one correct answer.

The right home is the one that supports the life you actually want to live.

You Don't Have to Move Tomorrow

Here's the important part: asking where you want to be five years from now doesn't mean you need to put a FOR SALE sign in the yard next week.

It means you start thinking ahead.

If you want to move eventually, what is your current home worth?

How much equity do you have?

What would your next home realistically cost?

Should you make improvements to your current property—or would you be spending money you probably won't recover?

If you're planning to buy, should you start preparing financially now?

And if you're considering leaving the Tucson area, where would you go—and what would your current equity allow you to do when you get there?

Those are conversations worth having before you have to make a decision.

Five Years Will Arrive Whether You Plan for It or Not

That's really the point.

Five years can pass remarkably quickly.

You can simply arrive there and see where life has taken you.

Or you can start thinking today about where you want to be when you get there.

Real estate isn't only about buying and selling houses. Sometimes it's about recognizing that your housing needs are changing before they become urgent.

So here's my question for you:

Where do you want to wake up five years from now?

And does the home you're living in today help you get there?
