Is Your Yard Giving You Enjoyment — or Giving You Work?

There was probably a time when having a big yard sounded great.

Grass to enjoy. Trees for shade. Flowers, landscaping, maybe a pool, and plenty of outdoor space for the kids, grandkids, pets, and weekend get-togethers.

But life changes.

And eventually, it may be worth asking yourself a simple question:

Is your yard still giving you enjoyment — or is it mostly giving you work?

When Your Yard Becomes Another Job

A beautiful yard doesn't maintain itself.

There is mowing, trimming, weeds, irrigation repairs, tree maintenance, pool care, leaves, landscaping, and the seemingly endless list of little projects that come with maintaining a property.

Here in Southern Arizona, we have our own challenges. Summer heat, monsoon storms, weeds, irrigation problems, desert landscaping, tree trimming, and maintaining outdoor spaces can require both time and money.

Maybe you still love doing it.

If you do, that's great. Your yard may be an important part of why you love your home.

But what if you don't?

Your Home Should Fit the Life You're Living Today

Sometimes we continue maintaining a home because it made perfect sense 10, 20, or 30 years ago.

But does it still make sense today?

Perhaps the kids have moved out. Maybe you travel more. Perhaps you'd rather spend Saturday morning having breakfast with friends, playing golf, visiting family, pursuing a hobby, or simply relaxing instead of working in the yard.

That doesn't necessarily mean you need a smaller home.

It might simply mean you need a different kind of home.

You might prefer a smaller lot, lower-maintenance landscaping, a patio home, a townhome, or a 55+ community where some exterior maintenance may be reduced or handled through the community.

The goal isn't necessarily to own less.

The goal is to spend more of your time doing what you enjoy.

There Is Also a Financial Side

Yard maintenance isn't just about your time.

Landscapers, pool service, irrigation repairs, tree trimming, equipment, water, pest control, and other maintenance expenses can add up.

Take a moment and calculate what you're spending every year maintaining the outdoor portions of your property.

Then ask yourself:

Am I getting enough enjoyment from this property to justify the time and money I'm putting into it?

There isn't a right or wrong answer.

For one homeowner, a large yard may be worth every penny.

For another, that same yard may have become a responsibility they no longer want.

Maybe It's Time for a Different Lifestyle

Real estate decisions shouldn't only be about square footage, bedrooms, bathrooms, and home values.

They should also be about how you want to live.

If your current home requires more work than you want to give it, there may be properties that better match the lifestyle you want today.

You don't have to decide to sell tomorrow.

But it may be worth looking at what's available and asking:

If I could spend less time maintaining my property and more time enjoying my life, what would that look like?
