Improving your credit score is a smart step toward homeownership. Here are practical steps you can take:

  1. Check Your Credit ReportObtain free copies of your credit reports from the three major bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) at AnnualCreditReport.com. Review them for errors or inaccuracies and dispute any mistakes you find.

  2. Pay Bills On TimeYour payment history is the biggest factor in your credit score. Set up reminders or automatic payments to ensure you never miss a due date.

  3. Reduce Credit Card BalancesAim to keep your credit card balances below 30% of your credit limits. Paying down high balances can quickly improve your score.

  4. Avoid Opening New Credit Accounts UnnecessarilyEach new credit inquiry can slightly lower your score. Only apply for new credit when necessary.

  5. Don’t Close Old AccountsThe length of your credit history matters. Keep older accounts open, even if you don’t use them often, as long as they don’t have annual fees.

  6. Become an Authorized UserIf a family member or trusted friend has a credit card with a good payment history and low balance, ask if you can be added as an authorized user. This can help boost your score.

  7. Diversify Your Credit MixHaving a mix of credit types (credit cards, installment loans, etc.) can help, but don’t take on debt you don’t need just for variety.

  8. Settle Any Past-Due AccountsIf you have accounts in collections or past due, work to bring them current or negotiate a payment plan.

  9. Monitor Your ProgressUse free credit monitoring tools to track your score and see how your actions are making a difference.

Tip: Improving your credit score takes time, but even a few months of positive changes can make a significant difference. Lenders often look for a score of at least 620 for conventional loans, but higher scores can get you better rates and terms.

If you’d like, I can also provide resources or connect you with a lender or credit counselor for personalized advice. Let me know how I can help further! Wes Stolsek, OMNI Homes International, 520-404-9773.
