HELP!!! MY POOL LOOKS GREEN!

As a Realtor, I dislike and have issues when showing a home and the pool looks green. It is a total and complete turn off not only to myself but every client I have shown homes to that has a pool. Here is some information on how to alleviate this:

When a swimming pool turns green, it is usually due to algae growth, which often results from low chlorine levels or poor water circulation. Here’s what you should do:

1. Test the Water: Use a pool test kit to check chlorine, pH, and alkalinity levels.

2. Adjust pH: If needed, adjust the pH to between 7.2 and 7.6 for optimal chlorine effectiveness.

3. Shock the Pool: Add a large dose of pool shock (chlorine or non-chlorine shock) to kill algae. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct amount based on your pool size.

4. Brush and Vacuum: Brush the pool walls and floor to loosen algae, then vacuum the debris.

5. Run the Filter: Run your pool filter continuously for at least 24 hours to clear out dead algae.

6. Add Algaecide (Optional): After shocking, you can add an algaecide for extra protection.

7. Retest and Balance: After 24–48 hours, retest the water and rebalance chemicals as needed.

Important: Never swim in a green pool, as it may harbor harmful bacteria.

I always suggest a homeowner hires a pool service if they don't have time or unable to keep their pools clean.
